Pet machines take more abuse than most: longer hours on carpet, more contact with furniture, and far more hair wound into the head. The shell is what keeps that debris away from the drive, so a crack or a snapped clip is worth correcting before grit works down to the belt. It is also the panel that holds the head square when you push on the handle, which means a damaged one changes how the machine feels underfoot as well as how it looks. Changing it is an outer panel job and leaves the roller and its bearings in place.

Two other black parts belong to the same machine and are ordered separately: the exhaust filter cover 52029SW, and the right-hand brush roller release button 52034SW. The release ring with spring behind that button is 52033ER, and the exhaust microfilter that sits under the cover is 52039RV — a sensible thing to renew while everything is apart.

On a machine used around animals there is a second job worth doing at the same time. With the shell off, clear the hair that has wound past the roller ends and worked its way toward the belt, check that the belt is still tracking centrally on its pulleys, and look for the fine grit that collects wherever a cracked cover has been letting it in. That build-up is the actual reason a broken shell shortens the life of the drive, and it does not clear itself once a new cover is fitted over the top of it.
