Natural horsehair is soft enough to sweep sealed hardwood, tile and laminate without leaving fine scratches, and the wheels carry the tool's weight so the housing never drags on the finish.
Hard floors are where a bristle brush earns its keep. The bristles gather surface dust ahead of the suction slot instead of blowing it aside, and the wide face means fewer passes across an open room. Bristles do splay and shed with time, and a brush with a bald patch starts leaving lines of dust behind.
