Turn a TurboCat EX power nozzle over and the brush roll sits between two supports: the drive end and the idler end. This is the idler bearing assembly, part 8556, that carries the free end of the roller.
Idler bearings fail slowly. Hair and carpet fibre work into the bearing, what lubricant there is dries out, and the roller starts to squeal or grind. Then it slows. Because the TurboCat's brush is turned by the air passing through the nozzle rather than by a motor, a dragging bearing costs it speed immediately - the brush stops beating the carpet and the nozzle glides over dirt it used to pull out.
Pull the roller before fitting the new assembly and strip the wound hair off both ends. Leaving it there is what kills the next bearing.
