A loose, knocking feel from the base of an upright often comes down to one tired spring. Part 2867 is the axle spring that keeps the chassis thrust member under load on the SEBO ESSENTIAL G1, ESSENTIAL G2, ESSENTIAL G4 and ESSENTIAL G5 and on the 300 MECHANICAL and 350 MECHANICAL.
It appears at position 149 in the 300/350 Mechanical breakdown and at position 138 on the ESSENTIAL G4/G5 sheet. The spring is what supplies the pressure the rest of the height mechanism relies on: it pushes the thrust member against the pile adjustment axle, and that pressure is the only thing holding a chosen carpet height in place while the machine is worked across a room. Once a spring has taken a set, gone soft, or broken outright, the thrust member floats. The setting creeps on its own, a knock develops at the base, and the chassis wanders rather than following straight behind the handle.
It fits in the original location with no modification and needs no shimming, but it is fiddly to seat, so note how it lies before the clamp comes off. The parts it works against are worth checking at the same time, since a soft spring and a worn bearing face produce almost identical symptoms: clamp 2856 holds this spring captive, thrust members 2834 and 2833 take the load, rubbing plate 2869HG is the wear face, axle 2861 carries the mechanism, and axle clamp 2849 retains the pile wheel axle. Searches for a SEBO axle spring, chassis thrust member spring or a G series height adjustment spring land here.
