The gas-pump style handle on an Electrolux Lux J or 2100 hose carries its on/off control in a rocker switch mounted in the grip, and part 9900S is the replacement for it. Every command to the machine passes through this switch, so when it fails the vacuum reads as dead even though the motor and cord are fine.
Failure is usually intermittent before it is total. The vacuum cuts out when the hose flexes, restarts if you work the rocker back and forth, or will only run held in one position. That is arcing across worn contacts, and it is worth fixing rather than living with.
Unplug the machine before opening the handle, and photograph or label the wire positions as they come off — the terminals are not marked, and a swapped pair leaves you back where you started.
