Cataloged as H526B and marked D-3C, this is the lock nut used on the Rexair Rainbow D3, D4 and D4SE. A lock nut is not an ordinary nut: it holds its own torque against vibration, which is exactly what a vacuum motor puts into everything fastened near it.
The locking feature is what wears out. After a few removals the nut spins down freely instead of dragging as it goes, and at that point it is a plain nut. It will work loose again, and the joint it holds develops rattle, play, or a part that drifts out of line. That is why a used lock nut should not go back on.
Thread it down to match the original, and confirm which Rainbow you have before ordering. If the stud threads look damaged, deal with that first; a new nut will not save a chewed thread.
