ProTeam's 10 quart backpacks are built to run quietly enough for daytime cleaning in occupied buildings, and the sound muffler, part 100597, is part of how they manage it. It damps the noise of the motor exhaust inside the housing.
The usual reason to fit a new one is simple: the machine has got louder. Mufflers crumble with heat and age, or they load up with dust until they restrict the exhaust path, at which point the motor is both noisier and working harder than it should.
