The sternum strap is the piece that stops the harness spreading off the shoulders, and its buckle gets snapped and released every time the machine goes on or comes off. Do that several times a shift for a year and the plastic tab eventually cracks or the spring in it stops holding. What follows is a harness that will not stay closed, a load riding badly across the back, and an operator who is tired well before the job is finished.
It mates with the existing strap webbing, so the swap takes a minute. Cleaning operations running these machines daily tend to keep a couple in the supply cupboard for exactly that reason.
