Part 189218S is the muffler for the Kirby Avalir Platinum. It sits in the exhaust path and absorbs fan noise before the air leaves the machine, which is the main reason a Kirby sounds as controlled as it does rather than like a bare motor.
Mufflers do not fail in a way that stops the vacuum, so they get ignored. What happens instead is that the material packs down and loads with fine dust over the years, and the machine gradually gets louder. Owners often put that down to the motor ageing. A torn or crushed muffler, usually from rough handling during a bag change, makes the change much more obvious.
If you are already replacing the outer bag, this is the moment to do the muffler as well, since it lives inside the bag and reaching it is most of the work.
