Rubber stretches and hardens whether a machine is worked hard or left in a cupboard for a season, so age counts against a belt as much as use does. Slip at this first stage robs the roller of speed however healthy the motor sounds, and because the loss is gradual it is easy to put down to the carpet rather than the machine. Glazing, fine cracks across the inner face, or a shiny flat section where the belt has been sitting all mean it has had its day.

A belt that has snapped outright is obvious; one that is merely slipping is not, and the giveaway is a roller that turns freely by hand but slows or stops the moment the head is pressed into carpet. If you are going in for one belt, fit both — the second is a few minutes of extra work and the same teardown either way.

Fitting it means opening the head, so have the roller out and the channel cleaned while everything is accessible. Look over the pulleys the belt runs on at the same time: a groove worn sharp, or filled with rubber dust from the belt that just failed, will shorten the life of the new one considerably.
