A 24 ounce bottle of Stain X carpet shampoo, part 90724-06S. The smaller size suits spot work and small rooms - traffic lanes, a stair run, the patch by the back door - where a gallon would sit half used for a year.
Dilute it according to the label for whichever machine you are using, and resist making it stronger than directed. Residue left in the pile attracts soil, and a carpet cleaned too richly gets dirty again faster than one cleaned properly.
Work it in, extract back out as much moisture as the machine will take, and keep people off the carpet until it is dry through. Vacuum first, every time - shampoo is for the soil that has worked down into the fibres, and surface grit just makes mud of it.
