Carbon brushes are the wear item inside an Ametek Lamb vacuum motor: two small carbon blocks, spring-loaded against the commutator, that hand current to the spinning armature. This pack of two, part 8505967-50, replaces the pair in the Lamb 122176-18 motor and also fits the 122167-00.
Brushes wear down every hour the motor runs. As they shorten, contact gets erratic - you see sparking through the motor vents, the machine loses power under load or cuts out and restarts, and a hot electrical smell builds up. Left long enough the brush holder scores the commutator and the motor is finished.
Replace both brushes together rather than one at a time, and look over the commutator surface while the motor is open. Match the number stamped on your motor before ordering, since Lamb builds many motors that look alike from the outside.
